Bus Stop Closed Due to University Ave. Construction
Riders Encouraged to Use New Temporary Stop
The bus stop at Alabar Hills is closed due to reconstruction of University Avenue. Concerns have been raised about the safety of people standing in construction zones to catch the bus.
Metropolitan Transit Authority (MET Transit) officials and project engineering consultants at AECOM have been monitoring the situation since construction began. In spite of discouragement from bus drivers and MET staff at the site, riders continue to gather in the construction area near Alabar Plaza to stop the bus. A temporary stop is being installed on the University Ave. access road between Casey’s and North Star. Individuals who normally get on the bus at Alabar are encouraged to use the new stop.
Early notification was made to affected bus transportation patrons and service agencies of this situation. Qualified individuals may receive certification for temporary door-to-door service through MET’s paratransit program. MET regularly serves Goodwill Industries of Northeast Iowa on Falls Ave. and North Star Community Services on University Avenue to serve people with disabilities traveling to and from these agencies.
“With the curbside lane closed from Cedar Heights to Ansborough, it just doesn’t leave us with many options,” explains Mark Little Met Transit General Manager. “We encourage all riders to catch the bus at the new stop near Casey’s but, we know some will still stand at the Alabar Hill intersection. We will keep monitoring this situation and have told the drivers on this route to let us know if they see any potential safety issues.”
Those with concerns are encouraged to contact Mark Little Met Transit General Manage by calling (319) 234-5713.
