Waterloo Fire Rescue in conjunction with Home Depot and Payless Cashways is pleased to lend you a Carbon Monoxide detector for a period of 3 days as a back-up while you replace your detector's battery or install a new detector. After 3 days, the detector must be returned to Waterloo Fire Rescue.
When a Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector alarms in your residence, there is a possibility of elevated levels of CO. Waterloo Fire Rescue will lend any resident a CO detector. The unit may be used in the residence which they occupy for the specific purpose of detecting elevated levels of CO. The unit must be returned to the station which provided the detector, the recipient must sign a document acknowledging this return policy and commitment.
There appears to be a problem with some First Alert models with a "FACO" module. This module unit is black in color and is normally installed in a battery type unit. These are older units that have been around for a few years. Most are pre 1995 models. These modules have a life span of 2 to 3 years, according to First Alert. Also, according to
First Alert, the post 1995 models have different type modules and have a warranty of (5) years as well as a life expectancy of 7 to 10 years. If the unit detects elevated levels of CO or sounds an alarm for some other reason, there is a reset period of up to (3) hours. Even the digital units take approximately (3) hours to reset according to First Alert. If the unit needs to sound an alarm and is in the reset mode, the unit will over ride the reset mode if the level of CO rises above 100 ppm.
Nighthawk units made by Kidde are manufactured to reset within 2 to 3 minutes. They also have a warranty of 5 years on the unit, but have a life expectancy of 10 years. If you borrow one of the Nighthawk units that has a 9 volt battery backup system, the battery MUST be installed and have adequate power to make the unit functional.
There was a minor problem with the Model #900-0100 made by Nighthawk.
This is the reason why Waterloo Fire Rescue in conjunction with Home Depot and Payless Cashways are providing this customer service program to the citizens of Waterloo.
Remember to check your detector in your own home to determine the age of the unit.
