Training Officer - Capt. Mike Moore

Mission Statement:

To provide the training needed to keep our firefighters up to date on new equipment, procedures and techniques while maintaining the basic skills necessary to be safe and effective at the emergency scene.

Objective:

The Training Division is a means by which a program of learning is developed to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow. Our goal is to continually improve the quality of our training.

Recruit Hiring:

A written test is given to all applicants. Individuals with the 60 highest scores advance to the physical agility test which consists of:

  • High rise carry - Carry a 45 lb. hose roll up four stories.
  • Pull a coil of rolled 2 1/2 in. hose up four stories.
  • Drive a 160 lb. sled 5 feet with a 12 lb. maul.
  • Drag a charged 100 ft. length of 1 1/2 inch hose 75 feet.
  • Drag a 135 lb. manikin backwards 100 feet.
  • Crawl through a confined space.
  • Aerial ladder climb.
Applicants wear fire suppression gear consisting of; SCBA, helmet and gloves. Applicants must complete the above circuit at least one and one-half times and be able to perform the skills continuously for 15 minutes. Upon successful completion of the physic al agility test the applicants are scheduled for an oral interview. The Civil Service Commission certifies a list of the top 20 to 30 applicants. Once hired the recruit completes six weeks of training.

Training:

All personnel train annually in the following areas:

  • Rescue Operations - structural, vehicle, water, confined space, vertical rescue, self-rescue.
  • Fire Fighting Skills - SCBA, ventilation, ladders, pump operations, foam application.
  • Preplanning - General fire studies, streets, hydraulics, engine response territories, tour of facilities for life safety, vehicle maintenance, ropes and knots, equipment, sprinklers, care of fire hose, EMS equipment, aerial operations, airport operations, records and reports, driver's training, officer's training.

Hazardous Materials:

Waterloo Fire Rescue has a Technician Level Hazardous Materials Response Team. Members of the department not on the HazMat Team are trained to the Operations level. The HazMat Team trains 12 times a year and the rest of the department train s with the team 6 times per year.

Technical Rescue:

Our Technical Rescue team is trained in rope rescue, confined space rescue, water and ice rescue and trench rescue. Members of Waterloo Fire Rescue not on the Tech Team are trained to the operations level. The Technical Rescue and HazMat Teams are capable of functioning together.
