University Avenue Reconstruction Project

Midway Drive to Hwy 63 – approx.. 3 miles of Complete Street Roadway including 5-lane section (Midway to Progress) and 4-lane section (Progress to Hwy 63), 3 bridges w/enhancements (includes 1 bridge demolition and ped box culvert installation), 1 roundabout, 8 adaptive traffic signals, backlighted street name signs, intersection/gateway features, and trail head/parking lot construction. In addition sidewalk, recreational trails, bus stops, street lighting, storm sewer, sanitary sewer repair work, water main reconstruction, and landscaping with trees and other plantings, and roundabout enhancements, and other amenities will be included.

Residents often ask why Cedar Falls was able to complete their project quicker. Simply, with no bridges along University Ave. in Cedar Falls, the project was less complicated.

Cedar Falls (IA 58 to Midway) – approx.. 2 miles of 4 lane Complete Street Roadway including 0 bridges, 1 small box culvert at Pete Jr High, 1 double roundabout at IA 58, and 4 two lane roundabouts.

Weekly Update

For the week of September 28, 2020 University Avenue traffic will be as follows for each phase. Phases below are listed in order from west to east to be consistent with the linked traffic maps.

Phase 2 (Midway Drive to Greenhill Road)  – University Avenue traffic from Access B (Tunis Drive) to Greenhill Road will remain head-to-head in the westbound lanes (north side). During this time, the University Avenue eastbound exit ramp will be closed. Greenhill Road traffic will continue to have lane closures. Access will remain for Progress Avenue, Midway Drive and three other University Avenue and Greenhill Road ramps. Traffic for the University Avenue eastbound exit ramp will be detoured south on Progress to Greenhill Road.

 Phase 1 (Greenhill Road to Ansborough Avenue)  – University Avenue traffic will continue to have lane closures from east of Greenhill Road to Falls Avenue.

Phase 3 (Ansborough Avenue to Hwy 63) – University Avenue traffic remain closed on University Avenue from east of Knoll Avenue to west of Hwy 63/Sergeant Road and Fletcher Avenue from Hope Martin Park to north of Joder Avenue. At the Knoll Avenue intersection, eastbound University Avenue and northbound Knoll Avenue traffic will be permitted to turn left.

During this time, University Avenue from Cedar Heights Drive to Knoll Avenue will remain open and access to the frontage roads will remain. Similar to previous years, business and detour signs will be utilized during construction.

Please see the attached maps showing the construction zone highlighted for next week.  

For safety purposes, please do not enter the construction area. Heavy equipment will be moving back and forth on the closed lanes. It would be advisable to remain behind the sidewalk on the property side during the reconstruction work.
