Quick Turn Around of Sanitary Sewer Repair near Cattle Congress

(Waterloo, IA - July 3, 2019) AECOM, the City of Waterloo, and Waterloo Waste Management Services are pleased to announce the completion of repairs to the force main sanitary sewer near the Cattle Congress grounds.

The complex design and repair of the existing 10-inch sanitary sewer force main was completed over a five week period reducing environmental impact and vulnerability of the flood control levee. The elevated priority of the repair project combined with the complicated location of the rupture within the levee required collaboration and responsiveness of Mayor Hart and City Council, City of Waterloo staff, AECOM Technical Services, Peterson Contractors and several subcontractors.

The City of Waterloo awarded the FY 2019 Cattle Congress Sanitary Sewer Force Main Repair to Peterson Contractors, Inc., of Reinbeck, Iowa, on May 21, 2019.  In order to repair the force main, bypass pumping was required from both the Hackett Road and Cattle Congress Lift Stations. Bypass pumping, using tanker trucks, began on July 2nd at approximately 6:00 am and ended at approximately 2:30 pm.  The existing 10-inch sanitary sewer force main and the leak have been repaired.

“We would like to thank all those who made this project a priority in order to complete the emergency sanitary sewer force main repair as quickly as possible,” says Doug Schindel of AECOM.  “We would especially like to thank:  Peterson Contractors, Hurst & Sons, Denver Underground, Cooley Pumping, MidAmerican Energy and Waterloo Waste Management Services for all of their efforts.”

All road closures required for the bypass have been re-opened. South Riverside Trail along the north side of Electric Park Ballroom to Conger Street will remain closed until the recreational trail and levee work has been completed.

For safety purposes, please do not enter the construction area. Heavy equipment will be moving back and forth in this area. It would be advisable to remain behind the sidewalk on the property side during the repair work.
