The Transforming Gates and Byrnes Park Project is showing great progress!
GATES PARK
On May 30, 2023 a contract in the amount of $9.36 million was awarded to Woodruff Construction (Waterloo) by the City Council for Gates Park Improvements. Costs for design and equipment pre-purchases are projected to be an additional $2.73 million. Value engineering meetings have resulted in meaningful project savings thanks to great cooperation between the contractor and design team. Total costs for Gates Park are currently projected to be $11.087 million. Work is well underway on the Gates Park portion of this project, to include all planned elements except those impacted by the ongoing environmental reviews on the former Chamberlain Manufacturing site. Great progress has been made on the spray park, basketball courts, soccer field, trails and parking. It is anticipated that the spray park will be open next summer with work on other features continuing throughout next construction season.
BYRNES PARK
On November 6, 2023 a contract in the amount of $7.05 million was awarded by City Council to Peters Construction of Waterloo. Fees for design, testing, and construction related services are projected at $1.744 million. Total costs for Byrnes Park are currently projected to be $8.797 million. A preconstruction meeting was held on November 14 and work on renovating the bath house will begin soon, along with some grading and preparations for the new pool. The existing pool will open for next summer, with demolition in August, 2024. Construction of the new pool following immediately. The new aquatic center will be open for summer 2025.
BUDGET
Total project costs are currently projected at $19.884 million. Over $12.5 million in private funds and grants are secured. The bulk of the remaining $7.379 million has been identified in City funds including bond proceeds, TIF funds, Storm Water and Sanitary Sewer funds. We are still actively fundraising to fill any remaining gaps.
