Waterloo Sanitation Employee Awarded for Driving Skills

Congratulations to Dennis Moore, a solid waste technician with the City of Waterloo’s Sanitation Department! He competed earlier this month in the Iowa Society of Solid Waste Operations (ISOSWO) Road-E-O Event for operators and sanitation personnel and was awarded third place in the Rear Loader Collection Truck division.

This obstacle course competition grades an individual on their knowledge of collection, detailed pre-trip inspections, and their ability to serpentine, parallel park, reverse, and drive their vehicle through very tight obstacles.

Justin Tuitjer, another solid waste technician with the City, also took part in the event that showcases individual skills of top truck drivers, equipment operators and mechanics to demonstrate who is the best operator. It was held in Cedar Rapids and includes six events:

-    Wheeled end loader
-    Tracked dozer or loader
-    Articulated truck
-    Rear loader collection truck
-    Side-loader collection truck
-    Roll-off truck

Rear Load OperatorsScoring is compiled through a written test, pre-trip inspection and the operator’s ability to safely negotiate the course without contacting barriers and cones. Time is only a factor when there is a tie.
